Is there any chance next time of climbing the tree to gett a bit closer? I'd be interested to see the pattern on the back of its head.

one word...

err... no. The tree was fairly spindly and a bit rough, and in someone else's yard. And I'm going away on Thursday, and it'll probably be gone :-(
